I have planned to write this review a long time ago, but I started to write my previous article which took me long enough, and also life and other yoyos got in the way. Anyways, here we are with the review of this guy. Spoiler alert: it's awesome.
I was torn between the black Delrin with galaxy caps and the white one, both look great and while I favored the white version I ended up buying the black one because I managed to get it for almost 10$-15$ less at YoyoSam.com compared to other stores (with a discount code, of course). I don't regret my decision but I can't deny the white looks so damn good although looking at both of them right now, I think the white looks better only because in the promo pics the galaxy pattern has few black and white spots, allowing for more exposure of the pink and blue pattern. Can't say if every white version looks the same as in the promo pic but my yoyo (the black version)looks a lot like the promo pic so I would expect the same for the white.
At first glance, the yoyo looks fun, the body has a stepped design that ends on a pair of fat rims. I'm gonna use the YoYoRewind terminology here and I will catalog this guy as an "H shape" yoyo because think it fits the description with the stepped design and the way the body curves inward with every step (YoYo Info Base by Yo-Yo Store Rewind). It's a tall boy so if you have small hands, you will feel it a bit big but, despite this characteristic, the yoyo is comfortable on the hand and your middle finger rests in the body with ease and in a very natural way. I think it's worth mentioning that the yoyo has no sharp edges so this enhances the comfortability.
The texture of the Delrin is matte and looks really nice. It's very uniform and, out of the box, has no blemishes or imperfections to the naked eye. The build quality shows off as soon as you see the yoyo because it looks smooth from every angle. At first, before buying it, I had my doubts because I didn't know anything about Delrin and I thought it was just a mundane type of plastic but after a small research I found out that "Delrin" is the Dupont branded version of Polyoxymethylene POM which is a plastic that has "high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability" (Wikipedia).
What does this mean? Well, for us, it means that it won't break easily when it hits the ground, it's very good for grinds, and will not wear down easily with use. Regarding the last, which can be a bit confusing, think of an Xbox or Playstation controller: They become glossy the more you use them but (in theory) this yoyo should withstand all your grinds without wearing down. Oh, it can also be machined instead of poured into a mold so this yoyo is a machined yoyo! Another cool thing about Delrin is that it does not get as cold as AL on cold days/nights so it's a great option to have at hand in winter!
One thing I liked about the texture of the yoyo is that it has a lot of concentric rings. Very fine and very close to one another, you can feel them if you run your fingernail from the outer rim to the bearing seat. I believe this texturing helps with the finger grinds because it helps in the reduction of friction. I guess you can say the yoyo has a ridged texture.
The caps are crafted nicely (as you would expect) and they are pressed onto the yoyo so don't try to take them apart. The color is vivid and, as you can judge by the pictures, they look a lot like the promo pics. ¿Why is this important? Because that gives you confidence in the product, in other words, WYSIWYG. The caps have a matte texture too which translates to low friction, but unless you're an experienced player, I don't think you'll be pulling any fingerspin or thumbnail grinds anytime soon because this version has convex caps (they are like small domes). As far as I know, most versions have convex caps but at the time I wrote this article there were some stores that still had the concave versions.
Spinning, the yoyo looks really nice. I love to look at the caps of the yoyo while it's standing still but I think the way it looks in motion is super cool and helps as motivation to keep the yoyo spinning right round, like a record baby!
The yoyo uses white pads. I can't really say if they're a specific brand but I can say that they're my favorite. They have enough grip as to not miss the binds without feeling too grippy. They don't seem to need a break-in time and the fact that they do not protrude from their seat at all makes it easier to play with the yoyo right out of the box. If you use the YYF pads description as a reference, this would be the "best all-around pads". They might not be as durable as the teal but they are less grippy.
Performance-wise, this fella is great. The spin time doesn't have anything to envy from any of my mono-metal yoyos. It also has a very good balance. It feels light since the conceptual density of this yoyo is low (0.582g/cm^3) but this does not have a negative impact on the way the yoyo behaves. Honestly, I believe my skills are still too low to say things like "this yoyo is ideal for speed play and you can change directions with ease" or anything along those lines, but I can say the yoyo feels lightweight and fast on the string and offers little resistance when I do whips or when I make it jump from one string to another.
I think this yoyo can pull any trick you throw at it, it's really fun to play with and if you're looking for an excellent plastic yoyo with a really good look, this one will be a great addition to your collection.
Easily the best delrin on the market. Love the review! Can't wait to see more reviews from you bro!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I got lazy and never updated the blog but it's still in my ToDo list. I have some yoyos I want to review since this post :P
